Australia: Airlie Beach Roundtrip through the Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef

Cruise from Airlie Beach across the Whitsunday Passage towards Hook Island, one of the largest islands in the Whitsunday group. Make the short passage towards Langford Island, a small island known for its sandy spit and surrounding reef environment. Its position between Hook Island and Hayman Island makes it a natural stop within the northern Whitsundays and provides a relaxed setting for a day centred on the water.

Spend the morning snorkelling, paddleboarding or exploring by tender before returning onboard for lunch. Public moorings are available in several locations throughout the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and should be used where appropriate to help protect coral and seagrass from anchor damage.

Cruise south towards Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island, one of the region’s best-known stretches of coastline. Go ashore by tender to walk along the white silica sand, swim in the shallows or simply spend time on the beach before continuing towards the northern end of the island.

Guests can visit Hill Inlet from the Tongue Bay area, where walking trails lead to elevated viewpoints across the inlet and its shifting sandbanks. Yacht access varies according to vessel length, marine park zoning and group size, so larger vessels may remain at an approved anchorage while guests continue by tender.

Cruise from Whitsunday Island towards Hamilton Island, one of the principal developed destinations within the Whitsundays. The relatively short passage allows time for a morning swim before arriving in an area offering marina facilities, beaches, restaurants and a range of shoreside activities.

Spend the afternoon exploring the island or enjoy watersports around Catseye Beach, with options including paddleboarding, kayaking and snorkelling. Guests can return onboard for dinner or dine ashore before spending the evening in the Hamilton Island area, subject to suitable berth or anchorage availability.

Depart Hamilton Island early for the longer offshore passage towards the outer Great Barrier Reef, with locations around Bait Reef or Hardy Reef considered according to weather, sea state and vessel size. Moving beyond the Whitsunday Islands introduces more exposed cruising conditions and provides a different perspective on the wider reef system.

Spend the day snorkelling or diving where conditions, permits and local restrictions allow. Larger yachts may be required to use designated anchorage areas, while tenders should use approved moorings and observe no-anchoring zones around sensitive coral environments. The captain may adjust the reef destination depending on conditions on the day.

Begin the return passage towards Airlie Beach, travelling from the outer reef back through the Whitsunday cruising grounds. Depending on departure time and sea conditions, the yacht may pause within the islands for a final swim, snorkel or relaxed lunch at anchor before continuing towards the mainland.

Cross the Whitsunday Passage and return to Coral Sea Marina for disembarkation. The final passage completes a seven-day route combining developed island destinations, remote anchorages, beaches and offshore reef environments across one of Australia’s principal tropical yacht cruising regions.
