French Polynesia combines volcanic islands, reef-protected lagoons, coral atolls and open-ocean passages across one of the South Pacific’s most distinctive yacht-cruising regions. The most suitable route will depend on seasonal trade winds, swell, reef entrances, vessel draught, anchorage conditions and the yacht’s operating profile. The Society Islands provide the region’s most established charter route, linking Tahiti and Moorea with Raiatea, Taha’a, Huahine and Bora Bora. Moorea offers dramatic volcanic scenery and sheltered bays such as Opunohu Bay, while Raiatea and Taha’a share a lagoon that allows for shorter passages between motu, reef locations and shore excursions. Bora Bora combines a protected lagoon with extensive opportunities for swimming, snorkelling, diving and watersports. French Polynesia also provides strong cultural experiences ashore. On Raiatea, guests can visit Marae Taputapuātea and explore the island’s Polynesian voyaging heritage before returning to the yacht. In Tahiti, Papeete offers markets, waterfront dining, cultural venues and established marina infrastructure for yachts beginning or ending their charter. For longer itineraries, the Tuamotu Islands provide a more remote cruising environment characterised by low-lying coral atolls, extensive lagoons and reef passes. These routes require more careful planning around weather, passage time and lagoon access.
